1.       WATER

Drink water – at least two litres per day. Start each morning with hot water before eating as this cleanses the system of toxins. The brain and lungs use large amounts of water which needs to be replaced. Over the age of 60 the thirst sensation is reduced – a dry mouth is the last sign of dehydration so drink enough to not feel thirsty. Long term dehydration leads to chronic diseases.

2.       FOOD

Eat a high fibre, low sugar diet. Be careful with fibre if you suffer from IBS or related problems. Avoid preservatives and additives. Try to include raw foods in your diet as much as possible as cooking destroys the live enzymes in our food. Boosting the immune system with raw and superfoods enables the body to repair and heal.

Two handfuls of cashew nuts is the therapeutic equivalent of a daily dose of Prozac!

Superfoods to include in your diet – Spirulina (the highest protein content of any food in the world), Cacao beans (contain magnesium, chromium, iron, manganese, zinc, copper and vitamin C), Goji Berries, Acai Berries, Ginger, Raw Coconut, Turmeric, Wheatgrass, Garlic, Green Vegetables including cabbage, spinach, broccoli, Krill Oil (the best form of essential fats).

Try to aim for as much raw food as possible (preferably organic).

Chew food thoroughly to pre-digest food in your mouth.

Reduce your intake of sugar.

Eat fruit before noon on an empty stomach.

3.       EXERCISE

Exercise elevates the oxygen levels in your body, improves your health, boosts your mood and immune system, pumps the lymphatic system, strengthens your heart and makes you feel good! It literally drags the stress out of your body! Aim for 10 minutes stretching, 15 minutes weight bearing and 30 minutes aerobic activity every day.

4.       STRESS MANAGEMENT

Stress suppresses the immune system and leads to ill health, depression and fatigue. Water, clean foods and exercise are key. Take time every day to sit quietly and focus on your breathing. Ask for help if you need it. Vitamin C is essential as stress produces adrenal which reduces levels of Vitamin C in the body. Niacin is proven to help with depression and mood stability. Remember, the best doctor and nutritionist is you.
